Avoiding Springtime Acne Pitfalls

While the winter months are bidding its farewell, the warm early spring weather is inviting people to spend more time outdoors. Looking around, people are riding their bikes, taking a swing at the golf course or tennis court, going for a run, hiking, and even taking the dog out for a walk.

It is a great time for activity but a rotten time if someone is prone to acne.  That is because these activities promote sweating which can turn into breakouts.

Before leaping into springtime acne pitfalls, it is important to understand the basics about acne.

Acne flare-ups can happen in teenagers and adults. Really, no one age group is immune to it.  What causes acne is oil pores in the skin.  Too much oil production in the pores can clog them and this turns into acne bacteria. The natural instinct of the body is to fight back and this causes inflammatory pimples.

Heat can trigger sebaceous gland production which produces oil.  Oily skin is one of the main the main reasons for acne breakouts.

Trouble spots normally occur in the following areas:

Forehead
Nose
Chest
Back

Any combination of clogged pores, too much oil in the pores, and not cleaning pores thoroughly can spur acne flare-ups.

And sweating is on this list, too. Some would like to think that sweating can flush out the pores but the truth of the matter is that it can aggravate acne.

Also, when it is possible, shower or at least use a face wash as soon as possible.

When talking to a skin care professional, remember to include outdoor activity levels to help find the right product.

Skin care products cost money so and there is no need to waste it hard earned cash.

Another term for both spring and summer breakouts is called acne mechanica. This is when people, engaging in sports and activities, have their skin irritated when it is being rubbed against the material of clothing, hats or any other type of sport gear.

Unfortunately, hardworking football and baseball players are no stranger to acne with their protective gear and uniforms.

During the beginning of a new school semester right after Labor Day, athletes tend to notice more acne because of the warm weather and extensive workout sessions.

If someone is not confined to wearing a particular uniform or sports gear, some sage advice is wearing loose clothing that is made from breathable fabric like cotton.  If possible, stay clear from spandex and nylon because that will trap sweat in.

Other tips to avoid acne are:

Scale back on moisturizer applications
Implement a nighttime skin care regimen which includes complete makeup removal.
Use a mild cleanser and/or non-soap cleanser
Purchase cosmetics which are not oil-based and lean more towards mineral and/or water-based makeup

These easy guidelines are a surefire way to keep your skin looking great during the warmer months ahead.
