Kick Off Your Spring Garden With Lawn Maintenance Tips

Although it may be hard to believe right now, pretty soon spring will be here and with its arrival will come melting snow. While this may be a good thing, keep in mind that melting snow means that soon your lawn is going to be revealed and after a long harsh winter chances are it is not in too good of shape. However, there are several lawn maintenance tips that you can follow to make sure that your grass perks up and the year starts out right.

First of all, once spring starts peaking its head around the corner you need to get out on one of the clear spring days and pick up any debris that may have gathered during the winter or ended up trapped at the end of autumn. This will involve raking up any branches and twigs that may have fallen under the weight of the winter snow and clearing your lawn of any leaves that may have been left over from the autumn season. Not only will this help your grass grow quickly and healthier, but when it comes time for lawn maintenance it will make the first mowing task much easier.

Second, you need to look around your lawn for piles of snow that may be desperately hanging on in large clumps. Oftentimes there are snow piles from drifts that will sit in a corner of the lawn until the summer months. In order to help get rid of it so that grass can spring up grab a shovel and manually force the pile apart spreading it out in sunny areas of the lawn so that it will quickly melt and disappear.

The next step is perhaps the easiest one of the spring lawn maintenance tips, simply choose a great spring fertiliser and apply it. However, remember that need to go light on fertiliser when applying during the spring so that you do not harm your grass roots.

Before and after fertilising be sure to keep an eye out for crabgrass because once it grows then it will be even harder to get rid of. Therefore, if you have crabgrass left over from the season before make sure to treat your lawn with herbicide. The trick is to make sure that you catch it two weeks before it starts to germinate. If you are not sure when this is or what crabgrass is you may want to ask a professional landscaper.

Finally, the last step is simply to over seed your lawn in any areas where it looks as if the grass is worn down or patchy. Areas of the yard may look particularly weathered after a long winter or may have been damaged by snow shovelling. You can never hurt your grass by over seeding and the practice will actually help to strengthen it so by all means place as much seed as you can in one location and kick start your lawn back to life.
